I observed in the different International subjects of the school – English, Mathematics, Science, and Health Education. The subjects mentioned use English as medium of instruction and consist of 1 hour. Teachers use the textbooks and workbooks provided, following the Cambridge Curriculum. They base their lessons from the book and the activities (seatwork, drills, assignments, etc.) are already provided. While discussing the lesson, they utilize the pictures of the book as their visual aids for them to understand. They write on the whiteboard to show them how to write letters in cursive. There are times that they draw objects, animals, plants, etc. in the discussion proper.
In my case, I was assigned in Primary 1 A and B. The adviser handles most of their pupils’ subjects, including National subjects that is why they only handle one class. Some pupils are just starting to learn the English Language. Their teachers sometimes explain or ask questions in Bahasa. Ms. Nara Silaban and Mr. Bendika Ilman, my cooperating teachers, will rephrase or translate the question so that will be guided in their answers. Giving follow-up questions make them think critically. They let the pupils answer in their language so that they can still participate in the class. There are pupils who initiate to help translate their classmates’ answer in English. Workbooks are used during recitation. The teacher let her students answer the given questions, and she will explain why the answer is correct or wrong. Teachers make new set of paper and pencil tests for their quizzes and other drills. The names of their pupils are listed on the whiteboard and each of them have corresponding grades so that they are aware of their academic performance.
