Teaching Practice

I started my teaching practice in the second week of January. The class starts at 8:00 in the morning and ends at 12:45 in the afternoon. I handled two to four subjects daily. I always start my class with a greeting and asking them: “How are you?” as part of their routine. Checking of attendance is important to know if everybody is present. Before I present the lesson, I asked questions everyone can relate, and I make sure that it is in line with my lesson. We use textbooks and workbooks for the discussion. To practice reading English words, we read altogether. After reading, I give recap based from what we have read. Pupils answer the activities on their workbook. I monitor them while answering and assist if needed. We will answer together through recitation. I asked questions from their workbook so that everyone can follow.
Each subjects consists of one hour. One hour is enough to demonstrate the different learning activities. If there are more time, I spend it in reviewing the lesson of the day and giving the announcements to the pupils. I follow the flow of the class activities from warm-up (motivation) until the conclusion part of the lesson.
There are unexpected scenarios happened in my teaching practice. In my first day, most students did not answer my questions even I rephrased it. Sir Ben helped me by repeating the question or by translating it. After that class, Sir told me that they did not answer because of my accent and my approach is not appropriate for their grade level. He advised me to know how to get the pupils’ interests so that the lesson is interactive. From his advise, it motivated me to improved my next lessons. From time to time, I get the attention of the pupils and they participated in the subjects I handled. Sometimes, it is hard for me to manage their behavior. I learned from Miss Nara to get their attention like singing: “Listeeen” (Beyonce) and by saying: “Class? Class? Class?”, and they will reply: “Yes, yes, yes.” And they now listen. It was not hard for me to discipline them because even I told them to behave even just once, the listened to me and followed. Before my last day in my teaching practice, I used my laptop to show the pupils how do people get cloth materials from animals. I brought my charger, but I forgot to bring my adapter. I just explained the process instead.
